About This Site

Every year over 400 bills are introduced by our elected officials at the state capitol. Each one is consequential, though some are mundane and some are quite dramatic. Each potential law will make winners and losers out of people, from schools to businesses, single parents to the elderly, students to police officers. To me, that's exciting.

That process of lawmaking, where bills are proposed, debated, amended, killed, or finally made into law, can be confusing and even mysterious. There might be a prominent news story about civil unions or new gun laws, but how exactly does that come to be? And what about the other hundreds of ideas being contested?

This blog is meant to offer insight into that process, to make it accessible for anyone. But I'm by no means an expert. I don't have insider political knowledge. I don't have a political agenda here. All I've got is an interest in what's going on under the dome of our capitol and a desire to unravel that mystery for myself and for you.

During the legislative session, lasting from January to May, I'll be tracking several bills as they make their way through. I'll try not to pick up on the ones we regularly hear about in the news, instead I'll focus on the more obscure but no less important. If you ever feel that I missed the mark, or even misrepresented your bill dear legislator, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss it. Have a certain bill you've heard of but would like to know more about? Just write.
